I went through the apprentice program with Tina Hoffman John Lyons Certified Trainer, graduating in October 2002.

Special Services:

I specialize in training YOU to train your horse.  The bond between horse and human is much deeper this way.  It promotes trust for both of you.  I have discovered through my years of gentling horses to saddle that it is NOT the horse that is the problem it is the human.

I've had situation time and time again where the horse performs on cue with a willing attitude all the time with me, and not for the owner.  Not only is this very dissatisfactory to the owner, and myself, but to the horse.  I finally came up with a program to remedy this situation ~ and guess what!  The only phone calls I get are phone calls from owners singing the praises of their horses!  You know why?  Because they learned together.

I have more people tell me that this program has actually saved marriages and improved home lives than I have with anything else I have ever done.  It's amazing to me.  Once again, I must reiterate, I'm doing what God wants me to do, and the horse is just the vehicle through which I’m doing it.  It's not even about the horses; it's about the people.  That's really what I am here for.

Anyone can "train" a horse.  At MoonWind we go way beyond horse training.

What you will learn:

  • How to read your horses body language
  • How to speak the "Equine Language"
  • De-spooking your horse
  • Trailer loading your horse
  • Saddle gentling your horse
  • Bridling your horse
  • The stand cue
  • Standing for vet/blacksmith procedures
  • General horse care
  • General horse nutrition
  • General horse First Aid
  • The side passing cue
  • The hips over
  • The stop cue
  • The back up
  • The Three Second Rule
  • Walk, Trot, Canter cues
  • The come to me cue
  • The go forward cue
  • Lateral flexion
  • Vertical collection
  • The cue spots
  • The three second rule
  • The head down cue
  • Collection of your thoughts
  • Mounted work
  • Ground Work
  • Trail Work
  • Arena work

These things always include both written and hands on work, and YES, there WILL be a test after each section.  You are not finished until you; your horse and myself are satisfied with the results.

You learn to do all of these things and many more in this program.  I really prefer this to taking a horse in to "train" it for you.  However if I must, please note, that I will give the horse the proper foundation work, it will be able to do all of the things listed below in 30 days.  However...CAN YOU?!!!

Horse training and RIDING is all about communication.  Can you communicate with your horse?  If not, if you are having difficulty with your horse, please allow me to show you how to communicate with him.  You will be amazed at the results!  It's fun and easy to do.

What to Expect

Your Horse will be treated as an individual at all times

I won't push a horse too far too fast

Your horse will be worked with on the ground for at least two weeks before gentling it to saddle

What you LEAD  is what you RIDE

7 yr old Shannon leading Lady 25 yr old TB mare

If your horse can not do all of the ground work safely and quietly, he is not ready to be ridden

Your horse will be worked 7 days a week

This does NOT mean I will be working your horse into the ground, we will go at his pace, some days will be intense, some days will be light, it all depends on the nature of the individual horse I am working with

Some Questions and Answers

So, what if my horse is there for fine-tuning for a show, or just for my own pleasure?

If your horse is here for fine-tuning, I will work with him on the ground for at least three days in order to help establish a bond between myself and the horse.  There after he will be ridden everyday.

Again this does NOT mean I will be riding your horse into the ground, each day we will find out what the "goal for that session" is, if we reach our goal in half an hour, then we are finished in half an hour.  The next day, we may choose a more difficult goal and not be finished for 3 hours.  It depends on the nature of the horse.

What will my horse know when he leaves there?

That depends on how long you leave him here, how many habits I have to fix and or change and what you want  when we are finished.

Okay, now, I know that sounds like a pretty vague answer, however, I can not convey to you enough that I will NOT produce a 30- day-miracle.  I work with your horse, not with your time schedule:)

Lets be specific:

What will a horse know in 30 days when he leaves there?

He will come on command

4 year old mustang mare coming on command

He will stand quietly for fly spray or detangle spray

6 yr. old mustang gelding standing for detangle spray

Advanced leading (Your horse will follow you willingly off lead I.E. stop when you stop, back up when you back up, turn when you turn etc. no halter, no lead rope, just you and your horse.)

He will yield to pressure:

some examples of yielding to pressure are:

Sidepassing

6 month old Dales Pony side passing on cue

Disengage the hip

Outside turns

Inside turns

4 yr old mustang mare doing an inside turn in the round pen (she's yielding to pressure put on her shoulder with my eyes in this shot)

step out in either direction on cue with the same foot you cue

stop

back up

give to the bit

3 yr old paint stallion giving to the bit

pick up all four feet

6 yr old mustang gelding pick up his hind foot (yes, I am standing incorrectly  ~ it's not polite to have human hiney facing the camera if you can help it:)

Okay, so what else will my horse know?  I see no riding, I want to RIDE my horse!

Everything we discussed above is done both on the ground AND mounted.  We just do it on the ground FIRST.  Your horse will know all of the above things either mounted or on the ground...there's more.....

Your horse will know how to be mounted from BOTH sides

14 yr old Molly mule being mounted from the right side

Your horse will have an emergency stop

Back up

Walk off Quietly on cue

17 yr old QH gelding walking off quietly with my 4 yr old son aboard

Stand still on cue (both on ground or mounted)

trot off quietly on cue

Turn left and right on cue

Side pass under saddle on cue

Stand tied

Go over obsicles

14 yr old Molly mule crossing a set of ground poles

Everything I have listed will be translated into the saddle...meaning that all these things will be done mounted as well.

MOST IMPORTANTLY your horse will will be calm and quiet while doing all of these things!

Our Biggest Priority

It's safe for YOU, it's safe for the HORSE, and you are BOTH calmer afterwards!

I'm sure you can see that that is actually a lot to pack into thirty days of training for one horse, no matter how calm they are when they get here.

***Please note, there are some exceptions even to the above items as far as doing things under saddle ~ unhandled mustangs generally take longer than 30 days to gentle to saddle, they can take even up to 3 months to be gentled to saddle.  Every once in a blue moon a domestic horse comes in that takes 30 days and two weeks to do all of the above items...(it has happened two times SO FAR)

Yeah, uh, I don't see any cantering, why not?

Ah yes, Grasshopper..this is because you must doggy paddle before you learn to swim..

Yes, that is one of my "vague" answers again.  Plus, it's late and I get goofy when I'm tired:)  What I'm getting at is, most horses are not ready to canter after 30 days.  Unless of course the horse is here for fine-tuning, that's a whole different story.

We offer some extras!

De-spooking

3 yr old paint stallion wearing the tarp

Trailer loading

14 yr old molly mule loading herself into the trailer
